As for your question: We plan to release Excel-based template designer (so far we have only been supporting Word-based templates) that will allow for Excel spreadsheet generation automation. We won't support Excel format output from Word template-based designs. In order to generate Excel reports, you will need to create Excel template in a similar way you create Word templates.
We don't have a precise release date for this feature, but you can expect it to be released by the end of the year.
